Click below to watch clips from CLAIRE Cardboard, wires, and all, this film is an homage to early cinema when moving pictures were digital-free and not less than a bit naive when it was the picture, the music, and the moviegoer’s own catalogue of experiences which came together for a truly unique and intimate journey through the dark. I strongly believe there is a place for this style of cinema in the modern world. This is the “multi-media” experience of the early 20th-century bringing with it an organic warmth missing in theatres and at the same time is a reminder of an era of excitement when amazing technological advances in cinema were right around the corner. While fleshing out the concept of CLAIRE, the idea of a “10-minute” short gradually grew into this 53-minute project. Working from an old Japanese fairytale as the story’s source, I began to realize the true universality of myths and fables and how they are a reflection of human experience regardless of a particular culture or time. Instead of a short film solely for fun, CLAIRE became a meditation about family, gifts in the form of people, and the transient nature of our journey. Milford
